If you want your child to have the top-notch oral health and smile they deserve, then you need to help them prevent dental issues. One dental issue you should help them prevent is enamel erosion. This is because enamel erosion wears down the tooth enamel and makes the teeth vulnerable to other dental problems. Our dentist, Dr. Sophie Baird, is happy to help you help your child prevent enamel erosion by giving you the tips you need, which are:

-Avoid giving them acidic foods and beverages: The acid from these products are the substances that attack the teeth and wear down the tooth enamel. The less acidic products you can give your child, the better. Instead, give them tooth-healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

-Strengthen their teeth with fluoride: Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens the tooth enamel and makes it a tough shell that fights acid and bacteria. It’s important to expose your child’s teeth to fluoride regularly; however, that is only the case if they are the appropriate age.

-Wait to brush: If your child consumes an acidic food or beverage, it’s best to wait 30 minutes to brush their teeth. This is because the toothbrush bristles will aid the acid in wearing down the tooth enamel rather than help the smile.
